This study focuses on the mechanical performance and microstructural evolution of a 3YSZ/CNT/HAP composite coating deposited on Ti6Al4V alloy via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The primary objective was to understand how the synergistic incorporation of yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) influences the hardness, elastic modulus, fracture resistance, and overall structural integrity of hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based coatings. A series of suspensions were formulated with controlled concentrations of HAP, 3YSZ (up to 30 wt%), and CNTs (0–5 wt%). Optimal EPD parameters were determined as 20 V for 4 minutes, with coatings containing 5 wt% CNTs tolerating up to 6 minutes without cracking due to enhanced film cohesion.
After deposition, all samples were sintered at 1000 °C under vacuum for 2 hours. Microstructural analysis via field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed that pure HAP exhibited a porous yet homogeneous structure. The addition of 3YSZ led to increased porosity and microcracking, attributed to mismatched densification behavior between HAP and zirconia phases. However, the inclusion of CNTs significantly refined the microstructure by acting as a reinforcing scaffold, reducing interstitial voids and promoting closer particle packing. High-magnification imaging confirmed uniform dispersion of CNTs within the matrix, with no evidence of agglomeration, indicating effective stabilization during suspension preparation.
X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the retention of the tetragonal phase of 3YSZ and the crystalline structure of HAP, with no detectable peaks from decomposition or chemical reaction products. This indicates that the low sintering temperature preserved the intrinsic phases and prevented undesirable interactions. FTIR spectroscopy further verified the presence of carboxylic groups on functionalized CNTs, confirming successful oxidation and improved dispersion stability.
Nano-indentation testing revealed dramatic improvements in mechanical properties. The HZC5 coating (containing 20 wt% 3YSZ and 5 wt% CNTs) achieved a hardness of 3.1 ± 0.2 MPa and a Young’s modulus of 196.2 ± 9 GPa—over two orders of magnitude higher than the pure HAP coating (0.7 ± 0.03 MPa and 26.3 ± 8 GPa). The enhancement is primarily attributed to the high stiffness and load-bearing capacity of CNTs, which effectively transfer stress throughout the matrix and inhibit crack propagation through mechanisms such as crack bridging, deflection, and pullout. The 3YSZ phase contributes to grain refinement and transformation toughening, but its individual effect on modulus is relatively modest.
The load-displacement curves showed reduced plastic deformation and higher recovery in the composite coating, indicating superior resilience. The calculated elastic constants suggest a significant reduction in the elastic mismatch between the ceramic coating and the metallic substrate, which helps minimize interfacial stress and delamination risk during service.
Fracture surface analysis revealed ductile-like features in the HZC5 coating, including pulled-out CNTs and bridged cracks, confirming the effectiveness of the reinforcement mechanism.2,6-Dichloro-4-nitroaniline Description In contrast, the pure HAP coating displayed brittle fracture with sharp, clean edges, typical of monolithic ceramics.Farnesyl pyrophosphate Data Sheet
In summary, the integration of 3YSZ and CNTs into HAP coatings via EPD results in a structurally robust, mechanically superior composite.PMID:34864628 The CNTs are the dominant factor in enhancing hardness and stiffness, while 3YSZ improves toughness through transformation toughening. The combined effect leads to a coating capable of withstanding complex mechanical loads in physiological environments. These findings support the use of 3YSZ/CNT/HAP coatings as durable, high-performance interfaces for biomedical implants. Future research should explore fatigue resistance, wear behavior, and long-term mechanical stability under cyclic loading to further validate clinical potential.MedChemExpress (MCE) offers a wide range of high-quality research chemicals and biochemicals (novel life-science reagents, reference compounds and natural compounds) for scientific use.
